Auster DeNoerval is a fictional character, this illustration represents the portrait which stands in his office, painted on the occasion of his graduation as a doctor.
This is my first time writing a critique, but I'll try my best. When I first saw this piece, it was very pleasing to the eyes. What mainly caught my attention the most was his face because of how light his skin is in contrast with everything else around him. The shading on his face was well done. The shadows behind the nose really help illuminate the light side of his face. His clothes were well done, but it seems like it doesn't connect well with his hands. It may be because his hands and face are the most realistic, and don't contrast well with the sketchy look of the clothing. The book was also well done. I like he etching done on the book, and how well you put in dark and light values. Though it seems as though it doesn't connect well with the left hand. It would help if the hand was angled differently so that it wouldn't seem like he was straining his hand in an awkward position. The background is also well done. I love how it looks a bit like aging paper near the bottom. It really helps give this piece an overall eerie feeling.
All in all, I think this piece is very well done. All the technique done here does imply that you must be an experienced artist, although artists will always have to improve themselves no matter how talented. Keep up the good work.
Very, very nice. Fantastic muted color scheme, especially the with the lighting on the book. The pale skin contrasts very well with the dark clothes and background. Wonderful mood you set here, love it!
